This Is Rula's Life
Chatting to Michael and George in the kitchen this morning,
Rula revealed that she was once a target for 'This Is Your
Life' and featured on the show some years ago.
On the long-running show, originally presented by Eamonn
Andrews and later by David Nixon and Michael Aspel, unsuspecting
celebrities were surprised by the host, who was instantly
recognisable by virtue of carrying a big red book.
The 'target' would then be whisked-off to a studio, where
friends, family and associates would be gathered to help tell
the story of their life. This included all their achievements
and a few embarrassing moments along the way.
Talking about her experience, Rula said that she appeared
on the show after Michael Aspel surprised her at the curtain
call of a panto.
When detailing who turned-up to celebrate her life, Rula
reeled-off a list of names including actors Christopher Timothy,
Susan Penhaligon and Anita Dobson, plus the first headmistress
from her convent.
"Was it a total shock to you?" asked George, the
actress confirming that she had no idea. Rula then recounted
that she was playing the Wicked Queen in pantomime at the
time and moved backwards on stage, only to step on Michael
Aspel's foot!
Sadly, the show represents the last footage she has of her
Mum and Dad, as the former died aged 74 the following day.
However, Rula said that all her family there because
of the show, which was, in her words, "The most extraordinary
privilege".
Michael then claimed that he was supposed to be on the show,
but had sussed it out, so it didn't go ahead. "They tried
to do it a couple of times but I didn't do it," said
the entertainer, before adding, "That's not to say I
would never do it".
Whilst the show may be making a comeback on ITV, it remains
to be seen whether fallen star Michael could once again win
the hearts of nation and become a potential target for This
Is Your Life.
