Urged by the DIY bug, Jack went on the hunt for wood in the garden in order to make a bow and arrow. As he arrived back in the living room, goods in hand, Anthea joked: “He’s back with some ammunition,” and then pointed to Jack’s toolbox where, she said: “He keeps things there to make little things out of.” Getting laces out of the affectionately known “rocket box,” Jack announced to the group that the making of a catapult would be “the evening’s entertainment.” After saying the wood was “perfect,” Keith added: “We could cut it in half and make two.” So Jack got busy cutting it with a kitchen knife - an eager Keith looking over his shoulder. With that task completed, his mind then turned to the making of a crossbow. Turning to Keith he said: “If we had a smaller bow as well, we could make a crossbow and that would be even better.” With boyish expressions of concentration, they got down to tying the laces to the end of the bow, but it wasn’t as easy a task as they had initially thought. “We need a bit of thin plywood,” suggested Keith, to Jack’s murmur of approval. But, regardless, they continued, while Anthea and Claire joked in the kitchen about their intentions for making the “ammunition.”
