Mikey Talks About His Blindness

Chatting to Dennis in the bedroom this afternoon, Mikey told the story of how he lost his eyesight.

As Steph assisted Dennis in doing his make-up (!), their blind peer said that he first had problems when his retina detached at about 8 years old. However, his Mum insisted that the doctors sorted-out his other eye, which was also suffering from the same problem.

When he was 15, the radio producer had another operation, but it was aged 23 that he lost his remaining eyesight. "I went in for an operation and that was that," said the 33-year-old, matter-of-factly.

When asked if he would rather have had eyesight and lost it, or never had it in the first place, Mike was glad that he'd been able to see until he was in his 20's, otherwise he wouldn't be able to recall colours and everyday objects so well now.

Furthermore, he told a genuinely interested Dennis that he was thankful for his Mum pushing the doctors when he was 8, otherwise his adult life could have been very different if he'd gone completely blind as a kid.

Mike went-on to say that he chooses his clothes by feel, prompting Dennis to tell him that his coat is absolutely beautiful and that he shouldn't pay attention if anyone says otherwise.

"I'm the gay one, can you tell?" added Den, but Mikey was being coy and said that he couldn't. "'Cos you can't see me prancing around?" suggested the camp Scot.
