Interview With Dermot O'Leary
In advance of the new series starting, BBLB host Dermot O'Leary
has been talking about Celebrity Big Brother 5. Oh, and Lycra!
So what secrets can you tell us about the new series?
"Well, no-one was spilling the beans deliberately, but
we kind of ended-up in trouble. There was a big meeting where
our producer sat everyone down and said, 'Look guys, we’ve
got a mole and when we find-out who it is, they’re gonna'
be sacked.' Davina and I looked at each other and kind-of
said, 'I think that might be us!' So unfortunately
they don’t tell me a bloody word now!"
Which celebrity housemate surprised you the most
last year?
"I tell you who I didn’t think I was
going to like, and I’m probably being a sucker saying
this, but I adored George Galloway. He’s a classic politician
in that he’s unbelievably charming and he knows exactly
what he’s doing, but at the same time I couldn’t
help but like the guy. There was just something about him,
he was just so charismatic, extraordinarily charismatic even,
and I have to say I was genuinely quite taken with the guy
when I met him."
Do you think that the celebs know what they’re
letting themselves in for?
"I don’t think people have any comprehension of
how that house can affect people, it's extraordinary. They
don't comprehend how claustrophobic it is, something which
makes some people very paranoid. Also, everyone says this
and it’s so true, but you can’t put on an act
24/7, so invariably the real you will always come out."
Are you going to be making more forays into Lycra
like you did on BBLB last year?
"When the situation calls for it. I never shy away from
Lycra!"
Did you get an invite to Chantelle and Preston’s
wedding?
"No, I didn’t. It’s a funny thing actually
because I don’t know Preston that well, even though
we had him on my radio show a couple of times. We’re
almost responsible for him getting together with Chantelle
I think though, because we had him on the (radio) show before
CBB4 and all he wanted to do was talk about Big Brother. So,
he subsequently came on BBLB as a guest and was brilliant
and very articulate about BB again, which is why they asked
him to be on CBB4. So I like to think that even though we
didn’t get an invite, we somehow had a hand in those
two getting together."
Have any celebs thrown a diva strop on BBLB?
"No, to be honest with you we’ve been quite lucky.
Dennis Rodman probably came closest to anything like that,
because he was just so truculent and quite difficult all the
way through I think. The guests are usually as good as gold
though."
What do you think the Big Brain psychologists would
make of your behaviour if you were in the House?
"That’s the reason I wouldn’t go into the
house! I don’t know, I love doing Big Brain but I think
it’s there to be questioned, because it’s all
interpretative science. With some experts I think, 'I absolutely
agree with everything you’re saying', but with others
I think, 'How does that make sense? The fact that someone
scratched their head at a specific time, does it mean they’re
mad? No!' Anyway, to answer your question, I think they’d
probably have me locked-up in a straitjacket."
Lastly, if you went into the Big Brother House, what
would your eviction night outfit be?
"Well, seeing as though we’ve just talked about
it, I’d have to go for Lycra, wouldn’t I?"
You can catch Dermot on 'Celebrity Big Brother's Little Brother'
and 'Celebrity Big Brother's Big Brain' throughout Celebrity
Big Brother 5.
