Sandy And The Elephants

It's day 5 and Sandy has been regaling the group with tales of his days in foreign lands.

At 43, he’s the oldest member of the group and joined the army when he was just 15. Having travelled all over the place in his lifetime, one destination stood out in his mind, and that was the island of Barbados.

It was memorable, because he got himself into trouble simply by arriving dressed in casual camo trousers etc. He was promptly forced to strip in the toilets when confronted by two angry Policemen, as only military personnel are allowed to dress like soldiers!

The Scot also told the attentive group about the time he came across a group of elephants that had been hacked up with a chainsaw, just for their tusks. PJ, Sunita and Jonny were horrified by the tale.

He detailed how he was working in Nairobi to try and stop illegal poaching, when his group found the elephants and established that they'd been shot.

The poachers, "Just cut off the front of their snouts with chainsaws,” he declared, continuing-on to confirm that sadly, the poaching continues to this day.

He said he would-have liked to have gone back to Africa to work with the elephants when he left the army, but civilisation has left him feeling too soft to go back.
