Substantial Amount Raised For Charity
By CBB2
The second series of Celebrity Big Brother has once again
raised a shed-load of money for good causes.
For the 10-day duration of the show, the public have been
regularly voting for who they want to leave the House. However,
unlike during the normal series when voting income goes towards
lining the pockets of the Channel 4 'fat cats', this time
most of the cash goes to charity!
During the show, 15p from all the 25p telephone votes went
into a special fund, with 10p donated for all the text votes
received. The remainder is earmarked for administration costs.
Therefore, having placed over 1.6 Million votes in total,
Big Brother fans have helped to raise around £220,000
for charity. Well done!
The money will be split between four charities with a theme
of 'Young People In Crisis'. The charities that will benefit
from the money raised, as chosen by Channel 4 and TV production
company Endemol, are:
Centrepoint - Founded in 1969, Centrepoint is the national
charity for homeless young people. It works to improve the
lives of 16 to 25 year olds who are homeless or at risk because
they don't have a safe place to stay, providing accommodation
and helping with personal, social, educational and vocational
needs.
About the money raised from CBB2, a spokesperson told us:
"Centrepoint are absolutely delighted to be benefiting
from Celebrity Big Brother. The money raised through the show
will go towards ensuring that homeless young people are given
the chance to get back on their feet - for good".
National Missing Persons Helpline - Founded in the
early 1990's, the NMPH is a much smaller charity that exists
to support those who have a loved one missing; describing
itself as more of a 'life line' to families than just a Helpline.
Also working in the interests of the missing persons themselves,
the charity is particularly concerned with the welfare of
vulnerable young people and is committed to educating kids
about potential abductions etc.
About the money raised from CBB2, a spokesperson told us:
"The £50,000-or-so raised from Celebrity Big
Brother may not mean a great deal to some of the larger charities
(in relation to their annual income), but to NMPH this money
will make a very substantial difference".
Rethink - By far the largest charity listed so far,
Rethink aka the National Schizophrenia Fellowship was founded
in 1972 and started to become a major provider of community-based
services in 1986. The charity offers help and support to people
with severe mental illness via many different services. Rethink
also aims to change people's views on severe mental illness
and to combat discrimination.
About the money raised from CBB2, a spokesperson told us:
"We are delighted to have been chosen to benefit from
such a high profile fundraising event. Money received will
help the recovery of young people with severe mental illness
become a reality".
Samaritans - We can't tell you a great deal about the
Samaritans, given that they failed to meet our deadline for
providing background information on the charity. For an organisation
that claims to be there 24 hours a day when you need them,
they didn't come through when we needed them!* Still,
we assume that they are grateful of the dosh.
So, very well done to all the people
who picked-up the phone and voted, not forgetting the mad
celebs who put themselves up for scrutiny in the first place!
As much as it is a cliché, the above information is
testament to the fact that you can make a difference,
however small your individual donation.
